Wrapping Up the Chassis

Well, its official. With the exception of the bulb seal which buffers the body from the steel chassis of the car, everything I need to do before the body goes on is done. There’s still a lot left to do once the body is on, but the list of things I even can do before then is getting short.

Last night I got the last bit of stuff I had to do to the body done — mounting the brake ducts.

The brake ducts have an aluminum mesh in them and they basically get stuck onto the brake duct openings on the body. The first thing I did was trim all the excess mesh off the aluminum mesh sheets.

Once I did that, I used an adhesive caulk to basically glue them to the car. Originally I started off using tape to hold them but they weren’t staying in place.

Eventually I got tired of trying to get tape to hold and drilled two small holes and fixed them to the body with clecos.

Today the caulk is dried, and they stick on their own. I’m not sure yet if I’m going to use rivets or a bolt anyway, or just patch the hole in the body and it’ll get painted over when the body is painted. I’ll probably see how well the caulk holds up over the summer.

I’ve got a few things I can do before the body goes on, still, but nothing I have to do. I’ll probably patch a few small holes in the cockpit and I’ll get the emergency brake hole patch riveted on, but I won’t be getting much more work done on the car before the body goes on. Its not clear if I’ll be able to find help this weekend, but I hope to.

In the mean time, there’s also some post-registration work I can still focus on. The aluminum trim pieces I’ve made for the cockpit need to be polished, and I can also fabricate the switch panel for the climate control switches. I’m relaxing tonight, though, and likely tomorrow night. I’ll get back on it this weekend.
